China-Europe Railway Express Advantages and Booking Operation Practice

2026-07-15 CccSun Editorial

As an important logistics channel of the "Belt and Road Initiative," the China-Europe Railway Express offers transit time and cost between sea and air freight, becoming a key transport mode for China-Europe trade.

1. Main Routes and Transit Time

Western corridor (exit via Alashankou/Khorgos): ~16–20 days to Europe, the primary channel; Central corridor (exit via Erenhot): ~18–22 days; Eastern corridor (exit via Manzhouli): ~20–25 days. Main destinations include Duisburg and Hamburg in Germany, Malaszewicze and Warsaw in Poland, Madrid in Spain, and Milan in Italy. Approximately 15–20 days faster than sea freight, 50%–70% cheaper than air freight.

2. Cost and Services

China-Europe Railway Express freight is charged by container or weight; a 40ft container to Europe costs approximately USD 5,000–8,000 (fluctuates with market). Service types include: FCL (full container load, suitable for large volume), LCL (less than container load, suitable for small volume), cold chain transport (temperature-controlled containers), and e-commerce dedicated trains (fixed schedule and location). Some trains offer "door-to-door" one-stop service (including domestic pickup and European delivery).

3. Booking and Customs Process

β‘  Book with railway operator platform or freight forwarder 1–2 weeks in advance; β‘‘ submit bookingpower of attorney (consignee/consignor info, cargo description, weight and volume); β‘’ confirm space and price; β‘£ deliver goods to domestic assembly center (e.g., Xi'an, Chengdu, Chongqing, Zhengzhou); β‘€ export customs declaration (at origin or port); β‘₯ train departs; ⑦ import clearance or transit upon arrival at European port; ⑧ delivery or self-pickup.

4. Suitable Cargo Types

China-Europe Railway Express is suitable for: goods with time requirements but where air freight is too costly (e.g., electronics, auto parts, machinery); seasonal goods (must arrive before specific time); high-value goods (railway safer than sea freight); e-commerce goods (overseas warehouse restocking). Not suitable for: very low-value bulk goods (sea freight more cost-effective) or urgent goods (air freight faster). Affected by geopolitics, some routes may detour or suspend; monitor latest developments.
